The Emotional Challenges of Accessing Resources

Money can cause further fracturing within an emotionally impacted community. There will be expressions of gratitude for financial assistance, yet also complaints of unfairness, frustration, and hurt when a request cannot be honored. We would hear: “But my neighbor got approval for a summer camp. The request I’m making is just as therapeutic.” “Why do so many people get financial assistance who were not directly impacted? Shouldn’t the funds exclusively go to those who were directly impacted, like my family?” “Why should I have to submit this to my insurance company first? Haven’t I been through enough?” And: “I heard you have millions of dollars available. Why can’t you approve this request?”

This is why having strong criteria set by a collaboration of individuals is important. You cannot avoid setting limits, and there will always be some who disagree with your decisions. You do not want money issues to slow down the healing process, though. This is why our team provided assistance to find alternative resources for treatment or funding when necessary.
